Costume, that is.

Yes. Giant red solo cups as a costume. Wanna know how it’s done?

Here ya go!

Step 1:
Gather necessary supplies

6 or 10 Garbage cans (dependent on the number of people you have. You want to be able to form nicely into a triangle shape!). We went with 32 gallons, but whatever suits you. If you’re a football team, you may have to find 55 gallon drums!

Spray paint in red (or whatever color you want your cups) and white that adheres to plastic. We used Krylon Fusion. You’ll need 1 can of color per cup, and 1 can of white per two cups.

Rope to hold up your cups.

A drill

A saw — handheld hacksaw or handheld jigsaw if you want it to go faster.

A larger ball or two to use as your ping pong balls. Can be a volleyball, kickball, beach ball… I suggest the type of ball gets decreasingly soft as the more alcohol that will be involved while wearing the costumes increases.

Step 2:
Flip the garbage can upside down and drill a starter hole (necessary) and relief holes (optional). You’ll want to leave about an inch of the base to create the illusion of the rounded bottom to the cup.

Step 3:
Cut out the bottom using your saw. The thinner and cheaper your trash cans, the easier this task becomes. Also, power tools will cut your time by about 2/3!

Step 4:
Paint the rim of your cup white. I flipped the can upside down to hit the underside of the rim first, then stood it right-side up to paint the top / inside. You don’t need to paint the entire inside of the can, but may if you’d like.

Step 5:
Paint the rest of the cup red. Doesn’t get any more simple than that. I used a piece of cardboard to keep the red paint from spraying on the white rim, or you can tape it off. Your choice depending on how meticulous you are about things such as that.

Step 6:
Let dry overnight. Do not stack yet since the paint still needs some time to cure. You can speed up the process a bit by placing them in a well-ventilated sunny place.

Step 7:
Drill four holes in the rim where you’d like your suspenders to attach. The hole diameter should be slightly larger than the rope you’re using.

Step 8:
Cut two pieces of rope the same length and thread the rope through the holes. Knot to keep from falling out. Depending on the type of rope you use, using an actual hot rope cutter (if you have access to one) or burning the ends of the rope with a source of fire (lighter, candle, etc.) helps to keep the rope from fraying — and your nerves from fraying.

That’s it. Total time to complete 6, not including drying time was approximately 5 hours for one person. Total cost between $20 – $25.

Happy human beer pong-ing as a Red Solo Cup!

I cannot claim this as my own, but I’m sure if I had more time to Google it, I’d find the author!

Common sense has left the building

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who
has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was
since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing
when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life
isn’t always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more
than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are
in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year- old
boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the
job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent
to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a plaster to a student, but could not
inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an
abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became
contraband, churches became businesses, and criminals received better
treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her
lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his
wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to
Blame, and I’m A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do
nothing.
