Online Banking

Over the last decade, online banking is much more prevalent in both the business and consumer marketplaces. Most financial institutions now offer consumers the choice -- and often offer incentives -- for using online banking. Unfortunately, many banks fail to make their interfaces easy for the consumer to use and are slow to improve their site's usability. The convenience of anytime banking can be hampered by bad instructions or design.

Even though online banking sites require a greater amount of security, that does not mean that the site cannot be usable. Chase Online Banking succumbs to this problem. In their desire to allow customers access to many banking functions online, simple functions often become buried under a hierarchy of menus. This can turn a simple task, such as trying to retrieve a statement or paying a bill, into a complex task. There are a number of usability problems on this site, but this analysis will only cover the area of downloading banking transactions.

Project Overview

Chase
Completed for a class assignment, I selected the Chase online banking transaction download module due to the number of clicks, hidden menus, and confusing instructions. This study required four steps to complete.

  1. Problem Analysis
  2. Designing an Improvement
  3. Prototype to demonstrate the improvement
  4. Evaluation to provide evidence of increased usability
